Greater Cincinnati Calligraphers' Guild

September 14 Meeting

A new year begins

*VENUE CHANGE*

We were made aware that the Arts Center has a conflict for our meeting, but no worries, we will still be meeting in Evendale, but just up the hill from the Center. The City of Evendale purchased a church on the same side of the Arts Center on  Glendale Milford Rd. The address for the Bell Tower Arts Pavilion is 3270 Glendale Milford Rd. Park in the back to access the lower level. I am assured that it is ADA compliant for our members. See you Saturday.

Wow! It’s September already, and our first meeting of the fall will be in less than two weeks. The planning committee has been busy over the summer and we have some fun, educational and interesting things in the works. But, first, a serious note, the guild is made up of all volunteers and we are a registered non-profit. We collect dues to pay for guild expenses, our meeting place, a Web site and misc. other things. Lately, we are not able to cover all our expenses, with the dues being paid, so the planning committee agreed to raise our dues to $30, to be paid by Oct. 31, 2019. To make paying dues easier, click here.

The link is active and set up through PayPal so you may use a credit or debit card. You may, of course mail a check or bring cash/check to our first meeting. There is also a donation button that you can use at any time too. We can explain more about this at the meeting.

Back to school, so bring a #2 pencil
Please join us Saturday, September 14, 2019 at our normal meeting space, the Evendale Cultural Arts Center at 9 a.m. for pre-meeting lesson featuring Italic with Karen McMannon: This is an on-going sequence of lessons and is optional. Because membership is familiar with basic calligraphy skills, Karen will introduce not just the hard and fast rules of developing an Italic Hand, but play with its possibilities.

BRING: lined paper, pencil, ruler and a favorite broad edge which could be Pilot Parallel Pen, nylon edged marker, or Speedball C nibs, Mitchell or Brause nibs and ink.

LESSON SAMPLING: September Meeting: Talk tools, size, slant, history of style development, testing the 45 degree angle, for simple, arched, ascending and crossed letters.10 a.m.
Patty Bertsch and Jennifer Carroll will show us what you can do with graphite. Bring a plain old pencil, art pencils, or any other graphite you may have, an eraser, paper stumps if you have one and paper to write upon. We will have some to try some techniques with, but bring a variety of paper, erasers, and maybe a brush and small water container for washes.

At the end of the meeting we will have a show / share with anyone who would like to show what work they did this summer or what class / conference information you have had.

Door prizes and refreshments will be served.
