Please join us this weekend, Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. to noon
Urban Sketching is not just drawing, it’s capturing the world as we see it right now. A visual journal of a place and time, smells and sounds; being in the moment.
Urban Sketchers is a global community of sketchers, with chapters in over 70 countries and 549 cities. Robin has been one of the admins of the Urban Sketchers Cincinnati Chapter since its inception in 2017 and helps continue to grow the group with the help of 3 other admins.
In this workshop, we’ll do our own urban sketch using our surroundings. We’ll talk supplies, how to find something to draw, starting your sketch using intentional composition on your sketchbook page and add in watercolor/pastels, or your preferred medium.
We’ll also go over the use of accordion sketchbooks and how to utilize those for travel sketching and capturing moments in one handy little sketchbook.
Materials:
- Sketchbook (any size, but I prefer a size around the 5.5 x 8.5 range)
- Pencil and eraser
- Waterproof Ink pen, such as Microns
- Your preferred medium if you choose to add color to your sketch
(I will be using watercolors, but markers, colored pencils, or even pastels are ok to use. I would not suggest using acrylics or oils for this workshop.)
All meetings are held at 10 a.m. on the lower level of the Bell Tower Arts Pavilion, 3270 Glendale Milford Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45241, unless otherwise noted.
Thank You!
Our Wedge Brush Florals Workshop was a resounding success. We had 21 people come and learn the beautiful florals, many of which were new to our Guild. With a turnout like that we shall consider more of these small one-day workshops.
Sad News
Holly Monroe reached out to me last weekend. She had been contacted by the daughter of Marvel Singleton to donate some calligraphy supplies. Marvel passed away this past February. Here is her obituary for those of us who remember her. Sadly her husband, Scott, preceded her in death.

Exhibit at American Sign Museum
Cathy Brewer was about to sit in on a recent sign painting workshop offered at the American Sign Museum and another will be offered in the near future, in the meantime try to catch the current exhibit, Back to the Drawing Board. Typically headed for the trash after their usefulness has ended, sign sketches could be viewed simply as renderings for how a sign will look and function in its environment. That practical view does not do justice to the artistry and detail that signmakers put into these sketches. This exhibition will take you back to the drawing board when considering what qualifies as art through an exploration of sketches spanning 50 years and gathered from across the country. Now through June 11. https://www.americansignmuseum.org/exhibits/
Stay Creative. Stay Safe. Be Well.
The Greater Cincinnati Calligrapher’s Guild is open to anyone with an interest in the lettering arts.
